The modern holiday classic

Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa's permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh realities that his father is on the naughty list and his half-brother doesn't even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.

Cast

Ralph Verhagen

Santa

Ralph is thrilled to be involved in Secondary Characters' production of Mamma Mia! For Ralph, it’s been a while since his performances in Elf: The Musical, The Music Man, Oliver, For Groom The Bell Tolls, and Bye Bye Birdie, so returning to live musical theatre has been wonderful. Ralph has found the enthusiasm and energy of the cast and crew to be invigorating and catchy. In addition to theatre, Ralph also sings in the chorus of the Chilliwack Symphony Orchestra, which restarts this fall after a long hiatus due to covid. Ralph finds virtual theatre and concerts to be okay, but the live music of the performances is magic.

Kimberly Iversen

Deb/Ensemble

This is Kimberly’s third production with Secondary Characters, having previously appeared in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Elf: The Musical. Kimberly’s other credits within the community include Anne of Green Gables: The Musical and Urinetown. Outside of theatre, she enjoys playing the flute, stitching embroidery, and spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Josh Power

Chadwick/ Security Guard/ Fake Santa/ Ensemble

This is Josh’s third show with Secondary Characters. His previous credits with Secondary Characters were The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 2018, and Elf: The Musical in 2019. He is thrilled to be doing live theatre again and hopes you enjoy the show.

Stefanie is an honours graduate of both the University of the Fraser Valley and Douglas College Theatre and Music programs, respectively. In 2013, Stefanie founded the The Stage Musical Theatre Academy in New Westminster in hopes that she could continue to enhance the lives of young people through the arts.

Shelley Wojcik

Shelley has been creating and performing musical theatre for over 20 years for various theatre companies and schools throughout  Chilliwack. Some of her favourites include Seussical (CSOPA), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum(UFV), Into the Woods, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Mamma Mia! (Secondary Characters). Shelley is a science, theatre and education graduate from UFV,  is co-founder, artistic director and resident choreographer for Secondary Characters, and is currently teaching high school at Squiala Secondary.

Steffi Munshaw

Props, Costumes & Set Designer

A self-confessed student for life, Steffi holds a Diploma in Theatre Performance from Douglas College, a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a Major in Theatre Performance from the School of Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University, and a Bachelor of Education with a Minor in Environmental Education also from SFU. When not moonlighting as a children’s theatre director, Steffi spends her days teaching grade 4/5 for Squiala First Nation.

A prolific educator, Steffi has spent many years teaching theatre to youth in Chilliwack, the Fraser Valley, and as far away as Nunavut. Steffi has performed all over the Fraser Valley with Secondary Characters, Chilliwack Musical Theatre, the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts, the Fraser Valley Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Douglas College, Simon Fraser University, the University of the Fraser Valley, Troika Collective, and 591 Productions. Some of her favourite onstage performance credits include Jo (Little Women, Secondary Characters Musical Theatre), Maria (West Side Story, Chilliwack Musical Theatre), and Alice (the Alice, SFU School for Contemporary Arts). Performing everything from classics to contemporaries and from opera to absurdism, Steffi loves creating newly imagined works of art.

In what little spare time she has left, Steffi also loves working backstage in theatre having stage managed, dramaturged, artistic directed, directed, musical directed, and designed many shows in both Chilliwack and Vancouver. Recently, she has directed for Secondary Characters Musical Theatre including The Wizard of Oz and The Last Five Years which had a successful remount at both the RickRack in the ‘Wack Festival and the Harrison Festival of the Arts. Steffi is resident production manager for Secondary Characters Musical Theatre and most recently set/props/costume designed and assistant directed their July 2018 production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Susan Newbury

Costume Construction

Susan has enjoyed dance and theatre from a very young age. Even though the pandemic has kept her off the stage for too many years, the challenge of Mamma Mia has got Susan back in her game! ABBA wasn’t part of Susan’s song choice growing up until she met her husband 40 years ago! He encouraged her to listen to ABBA, and now it’s a fixture of their Spotify list. Susan would love to visit Greece one day but for now, she imagines the gorgeous country in this lovely and funny musical that she has the privilege to play Rosie and work with a hard-working and talented cast, crew, and orchestra. Susan would like to dedicate this show to her lovely daughters, Coneitia, Celeste, and Chloe, “cause somewhere in the crowd there’s YOU!”, and to her husband, Randy, who always reminds her that even as they age, they can always enjoy a little theatre of song and dance to keep them young and to keep the spark going!

Kris Ward

Set Construction & Design

Kris is both an enthusiastic perform and avid woodworker. He combines these two passions as Secondary Characters' resident Set Designer, having designed and built Notre Dame Cathedral for The Hunchback of Notre Dame and this year's set for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Some of Kris' favourite onstage credits have included St. Aphrodisius (Hunchback of Notre Dame) and the villainous aristocrat, Braxton Prendergast as well as the timid Mr. Lawrence (Little Women). When not working backstage on shows, Kris has been working on his Cabinetmaker Apprenticeship through both North Island College and BCIT.
